I am a longtime arts and entertainment journalist and a recent graduate of the General Studies program at the International Center of Photography. I am also proud to serve on the executive board for the Bakery Photo Collective, which is set to reopen in early 2018 with new darkrooms and an upgraded digital facility. My most recent show, The Loved Ones, exhibited at Speedwell Projects this past summer. I really, really like hamburgers and old records, and Portland thankfully has plenty of both.
Why did you choose Portland? My partner and I moved up here from New York back in '09. We were sick of life in NYC and Maine seemed like the perfect place to make a new start. That's not to say the transition was easy, though!
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Tim Ferrell, cuz his comedy workshop enriched my creative life in ways I didn't expect. Donna Galluzzo, who made my time at the Salt Institute utterly life-changing and always seems to have my back. The entire crew at the Telling Room, for reminding me that stories don't always exist on paper.
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? I'm a music junkie, so Bull Moose or any number of the great used-record shops in town. Moody Lord's. Enterprise. Strange Maine. Electric Buddha. I love that Portland is still a town you can kill time in.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? That it doesn't suck in winter? I know that's not a popular opinion.
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Burgers, fries, shakes, repeat. Five Guys is pretty damn good, but local-wise, the burger at Hot Suppa is most-excellent. So is the burger at Palace Diner in Biddeford. I often drive there by myself and secretly indulge. Then I drive back feeling guilty, full of shame. It's fun.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Seeing a lot of friends at an arts-related event - a play or a storytelling show or an opening for an exhibit or even just a movie - followed by great food, maybe Hugo's if the occasion calls for it.
