Lives In Portland-We are all one!
Hello and welcome to my profile. My name is Sam H. Smith, Master Blacksmith & Founder of the Portland Forge. I am a traditional Blacksmith concerned solely with the protection of the Blacksmithing Craft as it was in the 19th Century and prior. I run a couple of shops across Maine. Valley Forge, my first Forge, is nestled by the river side in the picturesque Penobscot Valley of central Maine. The Portland Forge, my newest shop, is the renovated Blacksmith shop of the "Portland Company" built in 1846 on the waterfront of Portland, Maine.
I began my profession at age fourteen whereas I entered the Howell Works Blacksmith's guild as an apprentice. At the shop my duties included carrying water, sweeping floors, lighting the forges, shifting coal, and pumping the bellows. I learned under several Masters for several years working my way through the ranks of the guild. At the age of twenty I obtained the rank of master and oversaw the 1830's era blacksmith shop.
I felt the need to move on and obtain my own wright. So, in 2003 I moved to Maine and constructed my very own shop along the Penobscot River. I built my shop in the image of how I learned, the traditional way. I only use traditional methods in my ironwork. As it stands I run the only Traditional Blacksmith shop working full time in the entire state of Maine.

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? My happy place is before my forge & anvil.
