Job Illustrator and Painter / Private Studio
Lives In Westbrook
By day I work as a senior learning design & development specialist for Delhaize America. My personal studio is in my basement in Westbrook, where I burn the midnight oil, painting, drawing, etc.
Since 1990, I've been creating humorous illustrations and comics for publications all over the country, illustrated nine children's books, designed toys, posters, logo s... all kinds of stuff. You've probably seen my work in the Portland Phoenix, Vex, or Maine Biz at some point.
I've worked as a designer, childrens book illustrator, cartoonist, professor, and tattoo artist.
I guess you can say all I do is draw and hang out in Portland.
Why did you choose Portland? New York City was killing me, so I headed back home to Maine about 16 years ago. I chose the Portland area because it had a lot of the things I liked about NYC, without all the bullsh!t that comes with living in a big city, along with opportunities to have a lot of fun outdoors.
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Scott Nash and I have had many good conversations about illustration, and I appreciate his work at MECA, ramping up the Illustration department there. I like the work Rick Lowell & Tristan Gallagher are doing with their respective comic cons ... I like seeing venues where people can nerd out, to be who they are. And pretty much anyone making their niche business work.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Try to get them to move here. And we go through a lot of lobster.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? They call this a "city'" but it's really just a large-ish town. Maybe I know too many people, but I seem to run into friends wherever I wander. There is "big city" stuff here, but really, it's just a town.
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Holy Donut ... Christ that place is good!
I help nonprofits communicate their mission effectively, and I advocate for flexible work arrangements.
I love exploring, entertaining, laughing, connecting with people, and getting my hands dirty.
