I love all things food and drink, especially if I can meet and know the people who grew and made them. I've managed to keep one foot in the education world, while working with a couple of Portland's many great small non-profits when I'm not at the restaurant.
Why did you choose Portland? It is everything I loved about Cambridge in terms of city culture, and everything I loved about growing up on the North Shore of Mass. with easy access to nature. Since moving here the general culture of Maine, where people work hard to live the kinds of lives they want to have, has been really inspiring.
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? The passionate makers who have found their focus and made a living, or at least a life, from it.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? I like to take them to the places I like to eat and drink and to the stores that are unique to our city. The Farmers Market is always a big hit with guests, especially if we're cooking at home that night. Making a meal from things that were grown locally by someone you met makes sharing that experience so much better.
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? The Eastern Prom, with my dog and a book in the evening.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? The amount of cultural diversity.
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? New earrings from Se Vende.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Eating my way across the city from Blue Spoon in the East to Pai Men in the West and drinking my way back followed the next morning with a swim with the dog and a bagel from Scratch over the bridge.
Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? My jobs.
