I moved back to Maine 3 years ago after reading a NY Times article featuring the food scene in Portland with the intention of one day opening my own restaurant. Maine and the Portland community have such a good food following. I took a job as a server at a locally owned restaurant where I met my now business partner. We shared a similar vision of operating a casual neighborhood restaurant that would serve seriously good food from scratch, inspired by Maine and classic comfort food. We opened our restaurant, East Ender, in January of 2011. I love eating, drinking, all things creative, being outdoors, adventuring, and people.
Come on down and say hi! You can most likely find me manning the dish station or bussing tables.
Why did you choose Portland? I love that you can walk from end to end (of the peninsula) while staring at the ocean and the islands.
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Johanna Sorrel because everything she does, she invests her whole being. Krista Kern Desjarlais because she is a brilliant chef and business owner.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Summer - Take the ferry out to long island and jump off the dock as the ferry pulls away. Winter - Pai Men Miyake for ramen followed by a tour of Allagash Brewery
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? Paddle boarding off of East End Beach.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? Big city status, small city limits.
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Something beautiful to wear at Bliss Boutique.
What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Time & Temperature Building
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Oysters at eventide followed by a beer at Novare Res Bier Cafe, followed by a nice walk to caiolas for dinner at the bar, and finish up with live music at Empire Dine and Dance. If Empire doesn't pan out, Sangillo's for a PBR and a jello shot and a couple of songs on the juke box.
