Lives In SoPo

I grew up in northern Vermont, but I was always aware that I wasn't a real Vermonter. I moved there when I was four and my parents weren't from those parts, so however integrated we eventually became into the community of 250 hardy souls, we would forever be outsiders.

After college at the University of Vermont, I moved to California, where it took this almost-Yankee about six weeks to feel like a Californian. I went to grad school, started writing, launched a small press, taught college, and raised a son. Now, after 23 years on the West Coast--most recently in Portland, Oregon--I'm happily back in New England. I love living in Maine. There's a quality in people that I recognize from growing up in Vermont--a kind of saltiness that maybe comes from enduring the winters--but also an authentic welcoming friendliness and curiosity, sort of left coastal but without the giddy effusiveness. It's refreshing.

There seems to be a pipeline running between the two Portlands, supplying reciprocal inspiration for fermented products, specialty coffee, and facial hair. Many people I've met here have either just moved from PDX (that's the other Portland), or are scheming ways to move there. For all the similarities between the two cities, though, Maine's surprisingly free of smugness. Let's hope it stays that way.
