Laura Faure

I orchestrate a laboratory and training ground for the international contemporary dance community.

Job Producing Director / Bates Dance Festival

Lives In West End

For 26 years I have been privileged to direct the Bates Dance Festival.  I have been dedicated to developing the Festival into an internationally acclaimed contemporary dance program known for its artistic excellence, curatorial vision, and commitment to building community through dance. As a former dancer, choreographer and teacher, I also work as a freelance arts manager and consultant specializing in the performing arts.  I currently serves as a hubsite for the National Dance Project and am a founding member of The Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium. I have been developing cross-cultural residency programs with artists from Japan, Indonesia, Africa, Cuba, Portugal and Mexico since 1994.

I have lived in Portland since 1984 when I moved from my farm in New Hamshire. I spent ten years living on Munjoy Hill before moving to the West End in 1993. An arts advocate and enthusiast, I am also an avid gardener, walker, dog lover, reader and hard core foodie. I have always appreciated the many assets of Portland and have come to love it more and more as the years have gone by. I consider it one of the best places in the U.S. to live -- all the good things of a big city with almost none of the bad -- the exceptional community of creative people, the food, farm and restaurant culture, access to the natural world, the coast, Portland Trails, the mix of cultures and ethnicities, the arts scene ans so much more.

Why did you choose Portland? Access to the coast, creative community, architecture, arts, food...

Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Mainers I admire are these strong women leaders: Elizabeth Noyce, Maddie Corson, Frannie Peabody, Chellie Pingree among many others.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Walk around Peaks Island, the Eastern Promenade and the West End. Have a good meal at one of our many fabulous restaurants.

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? Looking out over Casco Bay from the Eastern Prom.

What's the most surprising thing about this city? Its many cultural and human assets.
