Passionate about cultivating the artist that exists within every Mainer
Lives In Neighborhood Nomad
I am an artist and teacher working in the greater Portland area. Right now that includes assisting local mosaic artist Amanda Edwards with a large scale public installation for the Boston Children's Hospital.
By afternoon and by night, I help students of all ages discover and strengthen their own creative power through parties, classes, and private lessons at Artascope Studios in South Portland. In the spaces inbetween, I find inspiration with my paints and other projects at Running With Scissors where like-minded friends who are interested in integrated education, community building, and arts accessibility also congregate.
In the spaces inbetween the spaces, I chat up strangers to try to learn more about their creative processes. I'm convinced that in Maine, there is magic everywhere.
Why did you choose Portland? Born and raised. I couldn't stop gushing about Portland when I was away, nowhere else quite compared to the quality of arts, entertainment, food, and natural beauty... and the people.
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Portlanders (and Mainers) have such extraordinary capacity for kindness, drive and ingenuity, it's hard to choose! Kate Anker for her unswerving dedication to supporting the artist community with a mindfulness to both accessibility and sustainability. Robert Nason for his demonstration of work and art as play every day. Catherine Bickford for her belief in everyone's ability to be a maker. The gentleman from Bard Coffee who arranged to bring in his equipment to make Turkish coffee as a special demo for some friends who were far from home- what a level of spontaneity and welcome!
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Wine and dine, whatever it takes to convince them to fall in love but always in the water- on the water- by the water. Live music, Longfellow Books, Scratch bagels, and challenges to find the best purchase downtown for a dollar are frequently involved.
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? On the Eastern Prom with coffee and sketchbook in hand, my studio, or visiting the Kandinsky painting at the PMA. I could live in that painting and be happy.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? The Fore River Sanctuary has a waterfall!
What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? The salty, tastefully fishy smell of Casco Bay that comes in with the fog. It's the way proper fog should smell.
I am the general manager of Avnt Dance and Event Center... home of G-Tric Dance Crew and Portland's annual Zombie Flash Mob.
I write fiction, short stories, and poetry. Lately, it's mostly haiku inspired by what I dream about at night.
I lead and create social breaks designed to reduce stress and connect people to their community.
