Creativity in the margins

Job Social Worker / Goodwill

Lives In Westbrook

I'm a social worker and father by day, DJ, musician, and cryptozoologist by night.  I've been hosting my radio show,  The Random Thought Crime Generator at the local college station, WMPG, for nearly 10 years. I've been playing bass in all sorts of bands for over 30 years (started young!).  My son and I volunteer at the International Cryptozoology Museum, located right here in Portland. The Portland area is great for all of the above reasons.  It's got enough cultural sophistiation to support interesting, slightly askew activities, but remains livable. It's also just a half hour drive to wilderness areas for recreation and encounters with all manner of wild critters. The best of both worlds I say.

Why did you choose Portland? This is a livable and interesting city without a lot of the hassles of most American urban areas.

Who are Portlanders you admire and why? I admire anybody who's "making a go of it, " be they artists, musicians, or business people. It's a friendly city, but the competition is fierce.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Choose a good restaurant, park approximately a half mile away and give them a downtown tour on the way there . (A quarter mile works in the winter.)

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? The park at North School. It's got the best view for free.

What's the most surprising thing about this city? How can it support so many coffee shops?

What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Best Bitter at Gritty McDuffs brew pub.

What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? The State Pier, if under-appreciated can also mean under-utilized. I still think its day will come.

Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. First Friday art walks during the summer. A double tall maple soy latte at Arabica is a perfect way to start any morning.
