Arabica Coffee Shop
Feathers Together, an exhibit at Arabica Coffee, 2 Free St., Portland, features two animal artists, Rachel Altschuler and Gay Freeborn. Harvest Gold Gallery in Lovell Maine is representing them at the cafe. Animals, primarily birds, are painted in two distinctive styles as each artist has her own perspective. Rachel paints her subjects as if posed for a portrait, birds looking straight into the soul of the viewer. Gay paints birds into a compiled scene, usually mingling them with a human subject and creating a story. She also paints many other animals which can also be seen at Arabica. The two painting styles blend naturally on the walls of the cafe. To purchase, contact 207-925-6502 or harvestgoldjewelry@gmail.com. Rachel Altschuler Growing up in bucolic Chester County, Pennsylvania, Rachel Altschuler could often be found playing in the woods behind her backyard and exploring nature trails.  This love of the outdoors provided not only a haven but eventual inspiration for her artwork. Rachel has always been fascinated by the unique energy and spirit of birds. For that reason they have become one of her favorite subjects to paint. By painting them in portrait style and focusing on the eyes, she is able to evoke their whimsical and sometimes mysterious personalities. Her bold use of color and purposeful brushstrokes are what make these paintings come to life. Rachel holds a B.F.A. in Art Studio and her M.A. in Art Education from Coastal Carolina University, which she attended on an art scholarship. Her work has been featured at multiple galleries throughout the Philadelphia area, Colorado, and Maine. On days when she is not painting, Rachel can still be found exploring nature trails near her home in West Chester, PA where she lives with her husband, Michael and their beloved basset hound, Elmer. Gay Freeborn A resident of Brownfield, ME, Gay Freeborn has studied art since childhood, inspired by artistic family members, an exceptional high school art teacher, and attending Moore College of Art in PA. Returning to painting after many years of developing an interior and landscape design business, she has chosen to focus on figurative animal art. “We live in a hurried world with little time to notice our surroundings. I try to create an emotional tie to the figures in my paintings by having them interact with each other and their environments and by sharing their story.”
