Lives In The West End
I'm a graphic designer, art nerd, plant enthusiast and sucker for animals. Before moving to Maine, I worked in publishing in San Francisco. You can see my design portfolio at lagasa.com. I grew up in Brazil, London and the Pacific Northwest. I love the beaches here, the lakes in the summer, riding my bicycle, and casting broken buoys back out to sea.
Why did you choose Portland? The surrounding natural beauty, the charm of New England, the strong arts community, the proximity to New York, and a dear native Mainer friend.
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Chelsea Holden Baker DeLorme for her astute thinking, kindness, and creativity. Meghan Carey for her welcoming nature, warmth, creativity and honesty. Sean Wilkinson for his moral integrity, kindness, humor and design talent. Winky Lewis for her kindness and talent. Sarah Schindler for her social activism, friendship, engaging nature, intelligence and inclusiveness.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Take them to Two Lights, go to Peaks Island and ride bicycles, go to Wolfe's Neck. Eat at Boda and have a drink at Grace.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? How many cigarette smokers there are here.
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Books from Longfellow Bookstore. Portland would not be the same without it. They are so nice. They will order books for you, make recommendations and even allow dogs -literate or not.
What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? The Farmer's Market. It's just amazing.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. A drink at Sonny's (on a week night because it's too crowded on a weekend), dinner at Boda, a talk or a movie at Space Gallery. The perfect morning includes a delicious cup of coffee at Tandem Coffee and seeing the welcoming, sweet people who work there and frequent the place.
Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? Space Gallery!
