Portland's ur-roastery, Coffee By Design is the first in a proud lineage of local micro-roasters who take coffee seriously. Given the proximity to the Maine College of Art, this flagship location is usually filled with as many students as men in suits.

The owner of the perennial Portland favorite Arabica seized the opportunity to do more great coffee in a big, beautiful brick warehouse space. There is plenty of room to spread out and tables near the windows have views of Casco Bay.

It's somewhat dark and the seating is limited, but the neighborhood loves it. It's a true local's coffee shop, with breakfast sandwiches, well-done espresso drinks, and the option to grab a pastry there, or from the Rosemont Market next door.
